The CETME is a roller-locked delayed blowback rifle in 7.62x51. The rollers lock into a recess in the barrel extension, being forced out of the bolt head by the angular locking piece. When the round is fired, the bolt head if forced back and the rollers contact the barrel extension, forcing them inside the bolt head. The rollers, however, must overcome the locking piece, which is forced out of the bolt head by the retracting rollers. The locking piece makes direct contact with the bolt carrier which is under spring force of the recoil spring. The bolt head is separated from the bolt carrier during unlocking. This system of slopes acting on the rollers under tension of spring puts the round at a severe mechanical disadvantage of moving the bolt head rearward, thus delaying unlocking. When the bolt group recoils, it cocks the hammer while the trigger is still pulled, and the spring loaded disconnector catches the top notch on the hammer. When the bolt group moves back, it depresses the rear of the ejector lever, bringing the ejecting surface into the groove on the bottom of the bolt head. This then impacts the casing, ejecting it from the rifle. The bolt group then returns towards battery. When the bolt head meets the chamber face its forward movement stops, while the carrier continues forward. This forward movement forces the locking piece into the back of the bolt head, pushing out the rollers into the barrel extension, forward of the locking shoulders. When the trigger is then release, the disconnect releases the hammer that is then retained by the sear on the spur opposite the disconnect spur. The safety acts to block sear movement. The CETME has a non-reciprocating charging handle that acts as a lever for the user to more easily separate the bolt group and move it rearward. The manual bolt hold open consists of a notch in the slot in the cocking tube for the charging handle. The CETME is field stripped by pushing out tho pins in the front of the stock where it meets the trigger pack, removing the butt with recoil spring, removing the trigger pack, then sliding out the bolt group. The bolt group can be further dissassembled by pushing the group together, rotating the bolt head 180 degrees, pulling it off, then rotating and removing the locking piece, firing pin, and spring.
